Breakdown barriers!
I was very fortunate to have had the joy of spending a week with W Edwards Deming at a 5 day training seminar in Denver, Colorado. Dr Deming was nearly 90 years old at the time and was still teaching, doing a full day behind the lectern for a 40 hour work week. Deming helped me to understand everybody wants to take pride in their work, and that it is the responsibility of management to discover and remove the barriers that prevent people in organisations from taking pride in what they do. Dr Deming taught me that the job of a manager is to lead by helping people do their jobs better.
ISO management standards require leadership and commitment to be demonstrated by: ensuring that policies and direction are established consistent with the strategic direction of the organisation; ensuring that adequate resources are available to do the work; directing and supporting people to contribute to effectiveness of the organisation; and by promoting continual improvement and learning. “There is no excuse for putting people on a job that they know not how to do.” W Edwards Deming
